Strike Your Irons Pure with This Simple Ball Position Fix

Transform your iron strike with an easy set up tweak and perfect ball position

The Secret to Pure Iron Striking

When you watch top professionals hit their irons, it looks effortless. They get that crisp ball-then-turf contact, consistent distance and accuracy shot after shot. If you’re not seeing the same results, you might be struggling with fat, thin or topped shots—or even when you do strike it well, the ball doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Let me show you how a single tweak at address, with the right ball position for your swing, can help you strike the ball like a tour pro.

Why Ball Position Matters More Than You Think

Good iron shots come from striking the ball first, then the turf, with the club travelling slightly down at impact. But many golfers make this almost impossible for themselves by getting set up wrong from the start. The most common issue I see is spine tilt away from the target at address, which puts too much pressure on the back foot. When this happens, your low point ends up behind the ball, making fat or thin shots much more likely.

The Set Up Change That Makes a Difference

Start by placing the ball in the centre of your stance, directly opposite your sternum. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. When you grip the club, avoid letting your right hand sneak underneath, causing your shoulders to tilt and pressure to shift to your right foot.

Instead, focus on moving your upper body and hips slightly towards the target. This should leave your shoulders feeling more level and about 60% of your weight on your left foot (for right-handed golfers). It’s not an exact measurement, but the key is to feel more pressure left. Maintain that left-sided feel as you swing, and you’ll start to notice your strike is more solid, with your club’s low point just after the ball.

Fine-Tuning Ball Position for Your Swing

If you’re finding that your divots are starting too far after the ball, or you’re seeing a very low ball flight with lots of roll, you may need to move the ball slightly forward of centre. This tweak will help you find a more optimal launch and a better balance between strike and trajectory.

Every golfer is different, so don’t be afraid to experiment a little on the range with ball position. The key is to keep your set up consistent—ball just forward of centre, weight favouring your left side—and pay attention to where your divots start. The middle of your divot is your real low point. Adjust until you’re consistently striking ball then turf, with good height and distance.

Avoid the Biggest Mistake: Hanging Back

Many golfers, especially those struggling to get the ball airborne, instinctively try to get under the ball by hanging back on the right side. This makes it almost impossible to move the low point forward and leads to inconsistent contact. Instead, feel left-sided at address and stay over the ball throughout the backswing. As you start the downswing, move your hips and body towards the target before rotating out of the way. This is what you see with the best players in the world and is the secret behind their consistent ball striking.

What About Hybrids and Fairway Woods?

This approach works beautifully with irons, but also applies to hybrids and fairway woods. The only adjustment is that you don’t want your low point as far ahead of the ball with these clubs. For hybrids and fairways, keep the ball fairly central if you’re just brushing the ground after the ball. Otherwise, a slight move forward is fine if your contact is still good.

Consistency Brings Confidence

When you consistently strike ball then turf, you’ll notice not just better contact, but also more consistent distances. Hitting out of the same part of the face with the same swing speed and loft every time will transform your distance control. Even small mishits won’t punish you as much, and you’ll find yourself hitting more greens in regulation.
