The Real Secret to Hitting Driver Out of the Centre
If you want to hit your driver further and straighter, one of the most crucial things you can do is consistently strike the ball from the centre of the clubface. Many golfers focus on speed and launch, but without a centred strike, you’re leaving valuable distance and accuracy on the table. Let me share a small but powerful address tweak that’s made a real difference for me and for golfers I coach.
Why the Centred Strike Matters
When you catch the ball out of the middle, you maximise your ball speed and transfer energy efficiently from the clubhead to the ball. This is measured by ‘smash index’ (TrackMan’s updated version of smash factor), which is rated out of 100. The closer to 100, the better your strike and energy transfer. Even a slight heel or toe strike drops your smash index, reducing both distance and consistency.

The Common Setup Mistake
Here’s what I see with most golfers: they address the ball with the clubhead sitting flush on the ground, right behind the ball. This seems logical, but when you return to impact, the clubhead is actually higher off the ground than it was at address. That shift raises the strike point, making it more likely you’ll catch the heel or even the low heel, which is a real killer for distance.
The Two-Second Setup Tip
To improve your chances of a centred strike, start by hovering the driver behind the ball so the ball lines up with the middle of the clubface. Once you’ve found the correct distance from the ball, let the club settle to the ground. You’ll notice it rests slightly towards the toe. This is exactly what you want. When you swing, the club will return higher, and that slightly toe-side address position will turn into a centred strike at impact.
This tweak is incredibly subtle but can make a massive difference. Even if it looks a bit odd at first, trust it. You’ll notice more consistent, centred strikes, improved ball speed, and, ultimately, longer drives.
Don’t Forget the Other Keys
Centred strike is only part of the equation. For maximum distance from the tee, you want three things:
- Correct launch (hitting slightly up on the ball)
- Centred strike (as we’ve just discussed)
- Clubhead speed
Start with this setup change and you’ve already ticked off a third of the puzzle. From there, work on delivering the clubface square and swinging with speed. If you want a structured approach to all three elements, my Driver Efficiency Code digital course breaks it down into simple steps.
Should You Hover the Club?
A lot of golfers ask whether it’s best to hover the club at address or let it rest on the ground. Personally, I like to hover it as part of this routine, finding my distance with the ball in the centre. If you prefer, you can let the club settle down after hovering. The key is to start by finding that centre, not just placing the clubhead behind the ball and hoping for the best. Some of the best drivers in the world rehearse their strike position by hovering the club, so you’re in good company.
