If you’re frustrated with your driver and feel you’re not getting the distance you deserve, you’re not alone. The truth is, it’s probably not your driver that’s the problem—it’s about unlocking the code to get the most out of whatever club you have in your hands.

Why It’s Not Just About the Latest Equipment

It’s easy to believe that the latest driver technology is the only path to longer drives. While modern drivers are certainly more forgiving and easier to hit, even a club that’s 30 years old can deliver impressive distance if you know how to use it efficiently. The magic lies in understanding and applying three key elements: launch, strike, and speed.

The Three Keys to Unlocking Driver Distance

To maximise your driver distance, I focus on what I call the launch code, strike code, and speed code. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Launch Code: Get the Club Travelling Upwards

You need the club moving up through impact. Too many golfers inadvertently hit down on the ball, robbing themselves of distance and optimal launch. To encourage the right upward strike, set up with the ball a little more forward in your stance. Try this simple drill: lift the club in front of you with your left hand, then swing your right hand underneath, feeling your lead side stretch and your trail side dip—this sets your body in the right position to attack upwards at impact.

2. Strike Code: Find the Centre of the Face

Centring your strike is essential. Modern drivers are far more forgiving, but even so, striking towards the middle of the face delivers the best results. Try hovering the club behind the ball with the sweet spot aligned, then let it settle naturally. You’ll notice it tends to sit slightly towards the toe—this is ideal, as the club will return to that position when you swing. Make your swing from here and focus on a solid, centred strike.

3. Speed Code: Swing Faster with Confidence

Many golfers worry that swinging faster means losing control and accuracy. The reality is, with today’s forgiving clubfaces, you can afford to add speed and still see great results, even on slight mishits. Once you’ve nailed your launch and strike, don’t be afraid to go after a bit more speed. Trust that the club will transfer energy effectively and you’ll be surprised how much extra distance you can unlock.

Modern Drivers: Forgiveness and Confidence

Where modern drivers really shine is in their forgiveness. The sweet spot is bigger, and ball speed remains high even when you don’t strike it perfectly. This means you can swing with more confidence and be more aggressive, knowing you won’t be punished for the occasional off-centre hit. For many golfers, this is the secret to unlocking those extra yards and finding more fairways.

Take Action: Put It into Practice

Whether you’re swinging the latest model or an old favourite, focus on launching upwards, striking near the centre, and swinging with intent. If you want to dive deeper into each part of the code and really transform your driving, I’ve put together a full video series called the Driver Efficiency Code. You can watch the first part and learn more about each step here.

Are You Struggling for Distance off the Tee?

If you ever find yourself watching the best players at your club (or on TV) and wondering how they send the ball miles down the fairway while your drives fall short, you’re not alone. Most golfers have heard they should 'hit up' with the driver to maximise distance, but actually making that happen can feel impossible.

The truth is, it’s not usually an information problem—it’s an implementation problem. Many golfers know what they should be doing, but struggle to put it into practice. The good news? With the right movement, you can unlock both distance and accuracy, without having to swing any harder.

The Three Keys: Launch, Strike, and Speed

To gain real yardage, you need three things: a high launch, a solid strike, and club speed. Most golfers try to achieve this by setting up with the ball forward in the stance and tilting the spine away from the target. The intention is good, but the execution is often lacking.

What typically happens is the weight moves into the right side on the backswing and then stays there into the downswing. The result? The low point moves behind the ball (which helps you hit up), but the club path goes out to in, leading to poor strikes, slices, or wild hooks—and definitely not the big draws or straight bombs you want.

What the Best Players Really Do

Here’s the crucial difference: elite players move pressure into their right side early in the backswing, but then, as they transition into the downswing, they start moving the lower body towards the target. The lead shoulder doesn’t just keep going forward; instead, it starts moving up. This side-to-side action with the lower body allows the club to drop onto the right plane. You can then turn through without throwing the club outside, delivering more speed right where you need it—at impact.

The Step Drill: Your Shortcut to Power and Consistency

One of my favourite drills for ingraining this movement is the step drill. Here’s how to do it:

Address the ball normally.

As you start your swing and the club reaches waist height, step your lead foot towards the target.

Feel your upper body stay back behind the ball as your lower body drives forward.

This drill teaches your body to shift pressure towards the target while keeping your upper body in the right position. You’ll notice the club drops into a great delivery position, allowing you to swing up on the ball with speed and control.

Try a few swings at a smooth pace first, focusing on the movement rather than speed. Once you’re comfortable, gradually add speed. You’ll be amazed how effortless it feels to generate more clubhead speed and hit longer, straighter drives.

Effortless Speed—Not Maximum Effort

Many golfers think they need to swing harder to hit it further, but often, more effort actually reduces clubhead speed and ruins strike. I’ve seen players drenched in sweat, giving it everything, only to watch their drives limp down the fairway. When you move your lower body correctly and keep your upper body back, you start to see the real gains—more speed, better launch, and much more distance with less effort.

Common Mistakes and What to Feel

Watch out for the classic error of staying up on your back foot or getting onto your toes too soon. This throws the club out and saps both distance and accuracy. Instead, feel your lower body aggressively shifting as you start the downswing, letting your right foot roll onto its side as you push off. Your lead shoulder should move up, not forward, keeping your upper body behind the ball.

Make These Moves Your Own

If you want to see these moves in action and really understand how to implement them, watch the full YouTube video here. For a more personalised approach, my online lessons on Skillest are a great way to get direct feedback and tailored drills to help you unlock your best driving yet.

Final Thoughts: Drive It Longer and Straighter

Mastering this simple body movement is the key to effortless power and accuracy. The best players don’t swing harder—they move better. Give the step drill a go, focus on shifting that lower body, and keep your upper body back. You’ll soon be teeing it up with more confidence and seeing your drives fly further and straighter than ever.

The Secret to Compressing the Golf Ball Like a Pro

One of the most impressive things about the best players in the world is their ability to compress the golf ball with their irons. They deliver the club with shaft lean, strike ball then turf, and send their shots flying long and straight. If you feel your iron shots lack that crisp compression, there’s a good chance you’re trying to achieve the right impact in the wrong way.

Understanding Address vs. Impact Position

A common misconception among many golfers is focusing solely on getting the hands ahead of the ball at impact. The real magic happens in how you get them there. From address, you want to move more pressure into your lead side, allowing your body to shift towards the target. As your hips and chest begin to open, your hands naturally move forward, shifting the low point after the ball. This helps the club travel downwards, making proper ball then ground contact.

The Mistake Most Golfers Make

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to "hold the angle" for as long as possible in the downswing, thinking this creates the much-talked-about shaft lean. While you might achieve some shaft lean, it often leads to dreadful accuracy, poor strikes and unpredictable ball flights. The truth is, the best players don’t freeze these angles—they move dynamically through impact.

The Game-Changing Pre-Shot Rehearsal

Here’s a simple but powerful rehearsal I recommend before every iron shot. Place an alignment stick on the ground, angled about 20 degrees to the right of your target (for a right-handed golfer). As you rehearse your downswing, feel the shaft of your club matching that alignment stick in the delivery position. At this point, your body will still be relatively square, but as you begin to turn your body out of the way towards the target, your hands and club will fall into a brilliant pre-impact position.

From face-on, you’ll notice that by the time your hands are opposite the inside of your right thigh, your lead arm and club shaft form a straight line. Now, simply keep turning to cover the ball and let the club do the work. This movement is what creates the look of lag and compresses the ball—no need to artificially hold any angles.

Why This Works for Every Golfer

This drill isn’t just for elite players. Even the world’s best rehearse this move, often using a pump drill to groove the feeling. With a couple of rehearsals before each shot, you’ll find yourself delivering the club more consistently, striking ball then ground, and compressing your irons better than ever.

What’s even more valuable is the control you gain over your low point. The best players have only a small variance in where their club bottoms out, while many amateurs see a huge range. If you can start to control your low point, moving your ball position for different clubs becomes much more effective and your strikes become far more reliable.

Consistency Leads to Power and Accuracy

Once you master this rehearsal, you’ll notice not only better compression, but also increased club speed, more consistent ball speeds, and improved accuracy. I’ve seen golfers transform their iron play simply by focusing on this pre-shot routine. The key is to avoid hanging onto angles, and instead, match that alignment stick on the way down and turn your body through the shot.

Take Your Game to the Next Level

Why Fairway Woods and Hybrids Matter More Than You Think

A lot of golfers tell me that wedges are their scoring clubs, but I believe fairway woods and hybrids are just as crucial for most players. If you can stand up to a fairway wood or hybrid, put a good swing on it, and strike the ball solidly, you’ll move the ball a long way down the fairway and set up better scoring chances. Yet, so many golfers are plagued by poor, inconsistent contact with these clubs. It kills enjoyment and shatters confidence.

The Key Skill: Controlling Your Swing’s Lowest Point

If you want to start striking the ball well from the ground, there’s one main skill to focus on: controlling where the lowest point of your golf swing lands. Ideally, you want the club to collect the ball first, then brush the ground just after. Most golfers who struggle with fairway woods and hybrids either hit the ground too early, miss it altogether, or find their low point changes from swing to swing. This makes solid contact feel almost impossible.

Ball Position and Setup for Success

A common mistake is playing the ball too far forward in your stance, which can tempt you to try and get under the ball to lift it in the air. This often leads to a whole host of problems: opening the clubface, slicing, topping, or fatting shots. Instead, position the ball just forward of centre. This gives you the best chance to catch the ball cleanly as the swing bottoms out.

The Right Backswing Movement

On your backswing, avoid swaying off the ball. If you move too far away from the target, you’ll need to shift back a long way in a split second, making it much harder to control your low point. Instead, as the club moves away, focus on turning your trail hip (right hip for right-handed golfers) behind you rather than away from the target. This keeps your body in a great position to move towards the target on the downswing.

Shifting Forward and Striking After the Ball

As you start your downswing, feel your hips moving towards the target. This helps you land the club after the ball, ensuring a cleaner strike. Practise this movement with a few rehearsal swings: right hip turns behind you, shift to the target, and land the club on the ground after where the ball would be. Don’t worry about making a full swing at first. The key is to land the club in a consistent spot.

Why Effortless Swings Go Further

It often surprises golfers how much distance they get with what feels like little effort. The length of a fairway wood shaft helps generate speed, and striking from the middle of the clubface maximises energy transfer. Remember, the face of a fairway wood is curved. If you try to add loft and hit high on the face, you might actually strike it low on the face where there’s less loft, resulting in low, weak shots. By controlling your low point and moving your hips forward, you’ll deliver the club with the right loft and get the energy into the ball.

Fine-Tuning Ball Position for Your Swing

Once you’re landing the club consistently after the ball, you can experiment with moving the ball position slightly forward if you find your low point is too far ahead. Just remember, if you can’t control your low point, changing ball position becomes another variable to juggle. Focus on consistency first, then fine-tune.

Building Confidence and Enjoyment

Most golfers can live with a little left or right movement if they’re striking their fairway woods 200 yards. The real frustration comes from topping one five yards, then fatting the next. Solid, consistent contact is what builds confidence to pull out a fairway wood or hybrid when it matters.

If you’re ready to get more from your fairway woods and hybrids, commit to practising the right hip turn, shifting forward, and landing the club after the ball. Take some speed out if you need to, focusing on movement quality first. When you start hitting it better, you’ll find yourself enjoying these clubs more and shaving shots from your scorecard.

Understanding Early Extension

If you're someone who battles with early extension during your golf swing, you'll know just how frustrating it can be. It wrecks your ball striking, saps your distance, and sends shots all over the place. Early extension is when, during your swing, your hips move towards the ball and you stand up out of posture. This can happen in both the backswing and downswing. Most golfers think of it as purely a downswing issue, but it often starts much earlier.

The result? Poor contact, inconsistent club path, and a club face that's hard to control. It's a problem I've faced myself in the past, so I know how damaging it can be.

What Really Causes Early Extension?

Many golfers (and coaches) focus on the hips and chest, but the real root cause is usually your feet. If you don't use your feet properly, especially the lead foot during your downswing, your hips are forced to move closer to the ball. That causes you to lose posture and makes solid, consistent strikes almost impossible.

The Simple Drill to Fix Early Extension

Let's get practical. Here’s an exercise I recommend:

Get into your golf posture with hands out in front of you.

Imagine you're about to jump backwards, dragging your feet along the ground.

Feel your hips move back and your chest stay down.

This is the opposite of early extension where your hips move forward and your chest comes up. If you can get a feel for this movement, you’ll notice a real difference in how you maintain posture and control through the swing.

Using Your Feet Properly: The Key Moves

For the backswing, focus on pushing your right (trail) foot away from the target as you start the club away. This pressure helps your trail hip move back behind you, setting your body in the right position.

On the downswing, shift your pressure towards the target and then push hard into your left (lead) foot. As you do this, the lead hip gets out of the way and your hips turn, not thrust forward.

Even without a club, you can rehearse this pattern: push off your right foot, shift, then push off your left. You’ll find it much harder to early extend when you move in this sequence. It’s a simple but powerful feel.

Powerful Inspiration from the Pros

If you're not convinced this works, take a look at Matt Fitzpatrick. He used to have issues with the club dropping behind him and struggled with consistency. Now, he’s focused on pushing so hard into his lead foot that he almost jumps back out of the way during the downswing. That forceful use of the ground helps him maintain posture and generate speed.

You don’t have to leap like Matt right away, but even exaggerating the push into your lead foot can help. As you get used to it, your strikes will improve, you’ll gain speed and your shots will fly straighter.

Chest Down, Hips Back: The Classic Feel

Some golfers like to focus on the feel of keeping the hips back and chest down through impact. That’s a solid cue, but the real magic happens when you use your feet properly. The harder you push with your feet, the more your hips move back and your chest stays down naturally. Combine this with a good lateral shift and you’ll find it so much easier to deliver the club consistently.

Make It Part of Your Practice

Next time you’re on the range, rehearse these moves. Start with some easy swings, focus on pushing off your trail foot in the backswing, then shifting and pushing hard into your lead foot in the downswing. Don’t worry if it feels exaggerated at first. With practice, you’ll see faster swings, better strikes and much more consistency.

Why Low Point Control Changes Everything

If I were starting golf all over again, the very first thing I'd learn is how to control my low point. The difference between hitting the ball first, then the ground, and those frustrating fat or thin shots all comes down to this fundamental. Even experienced golfers can struggle with low point control, leading to weak strikes and shots that never feel quite right. Meanwhile, the best players in the world make this look effortless — and that’s no accident.

What Is Low Point Control?

Low point control is the ability to have the bottom of your swing arc happen after the ball, not before it. This means you strike the ball first, then the turf, delivering a clean, powerful and consistent shot. When you get this right, you not only improve your strike but also gain control over your clubface and swing path. Your shots become more predictable, and your confidence soars.

The Secret: Body Movement, Not Just Hands

A common misconception is that you need to try and hit down on the ball or keep your hands forward at impact. In reality, great low point control happens because your whole body moves correctly through the shot. At address, your weight might feel 50/50, but many golfers are already sitting back, subconsciously trying to help the ball into the air. This leads to hitting the ground first and poor strikes.

Instead, focus on moving a little more weight into your lead side at address. As you begin your downswing, let your hips move towards the target before they begin to turn. This shift re-centres your swing, ensuring your low point is ahead of the ball. The lead leg straightens, your torso moves towards the target, and you achieve forward shaft lean naturally, not by forcing your hands forward.

The Simple Drill for Better Striking

Here’s a great way to start mastering low point control:

Take your normal setup but feel a bit more weight on your lead side.

Make your backswing.

As you start down, let your hips move towards the target before turning.

Focus on landing the club on the ground after the ball.

Start with slower, controlled swings to get the feel, then gradually add speed.

You’ll notice even with less speed, you’ll get a penetrating launch and good distance, simply because you’re striking the ball first and delofting the club at impact.

Don’t Fear the Ground — Learn to Extend

Some golfers, once they start shifting towards the target, worry about hitting the ground too hard and end up pulling up or chicken-winging through impact. To fix this, think about your left hip moving up and your chest looking up to the sky as you go through the shot. Feel tall and extended on your follow-through. This keeps you from burying the club and ensures a clean, crisp strike.

It’s not about staying down on the shot. If you stay too low, even with good low point control, you risk catching the ground before the ball. So, extend upwards, finish tall, and let everything stretch out through impact.

Ball Position and Different Clubs

As you move to longer, less lofted clubs, you don’t need as much shaft lean. You can move the ball slightly forward in your stance, still focusing on that good body movement. The key is to keep your low point ahead of the ball, adjusting ball position as necessary. Even with a 2-iron, this approach produces powerful, low-flying rockets off the face.

The Takeaway: Make Golf Simpler and More Fun

If you really want to become a better ball striker, put your focus on low point control. Learn to move your body correctly, strike ball then ground, and extend through impact. It’s the number one skill that separates great ball strikers from the rest. Once you get it, golf feels easier, more enjoyable and your scores will thank you for it.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of standing in the middle of the fairway, making a pure strike with your irons, hearing that crisp contact, and seeing the ball land softly on the green with just a hint of turf lifted after impact. But if you’re someone who never seems to take a divot, or you’re unsure whether your divots are helping or hindering your game, it’s time to give your ground contact some proper attention.

Why Taking a Divot Matters

When hitting irons from the turf, striking ball then ground is key. The club head travels in a circular arc around the body. It ascends on the backswing, comes back down, reaches its lowest point, and then rises again. For solid contact, the lowest point of your swing (your low point) should be after the golf ball, not before or at the ball. This ensures you’re compressing the ball and not hitting it thin or fat.

If you’re not making any contact with the ground, it’s hard to know if your low point is in the right place. I always advise golfers to set up as normal, then just inside the ball, make a swing and focus on brushing the turf. Many will initially strike behind the ball, so the next step is to shift more onto your lead side during the downswing. This helps move the low point forward, creating that desirable ball-then-turf strike.

Understanding Divot Depth

Once you’re taking divots, it’s important to learn from them. Some golfers take deep divots, others (like me) create a shallower mark. The depth and position of your divot offer feedback about your swing.

Deep Divots: If you’re digging deep, your low point is too far forward and too low. You’ll tend to hit the ball lower and may struggle with consistency. To fix this, focus on shifting into your lead side, but also make sure your low point isn’t excessively far ahead of the ball.

Shallow Divots: With shallower divots, your low point is closer to the ball, perhaps just an inch or two after impact. This leads to higher ball flights and cleaner strikes. If the divot is too shallow, you might thin or even top the ball, so ensure you’re still shifting weight and getting the club low enough at impact.

Check the middle of your divot. For me, it’s usually about two to three inches after the ball. That’s ideal. Try to match your divot depth and location to your swing style, not someone else’s.

Fixing No-Divot Strikes

If you simply can’t take a divot, don’t worry. The classic advice is often to keep your head down, but this can actually make things worse by forcing you into a shorter, more restrictive swing. Instead, as you reach the top of your backswing, focus on moving down and towards the target, almost as if you’re letting yourself fall gently forward. This movement helps you get the bottom of your swing arc lower and ahead of the ball, making it far easier to get that satisfying turf contact.

A simple drill is to address the ball, then without hitting it, make a swing aiming to brush the grass just after where the ball would be. If you’re struggling, exaggerate the move towards your lead side and downwards. Over time, you’ll find the right balance for your own swing.

Matching Divot to Swing and Equipment

Remember, the ideal divot for you depends on your natural swing and your clubs. Deeper divots might suit certain swings and lower ball flights, while shallower divots can help with height and control. If you’re unsure about whether your divot matches your technique or want some personalised help, I offer online lessons through Skillest where we can analyse your swing and work on your turf interaction together.

Consistency is Key

With every iron shot from the ground, aim for a low point just after the ball—ball first, then ground. That’s the foundation of great iron play and will help you hit more greens with confidence.

Why Tempo Feels So Elusive

One of the biggest frustrations I see in golfers is feeling like you’re swinging the club quickly but just not getting the distance you deserve. It’s easy to watch the best players—think Rory McIlroy or Fred Couples—and wonder how they make it all look so effortless. The truth is, it’s not about swinging harder. It’s about moving in the right sequence to unlock that easy power.

The Mistake Most Golfers Make

If you find yourself getting to the top of your backswing and then rushing the club down towards the ball, you’re not alone. That urge to hit harder leads to an out-of-sequence move: club head first, then arms, then body, then legs. The result? Poor strikes, lost energy, and a lack of distance—even when you feel like you’re giving it everything.

The Secret of Effortless Power

Watch the world’s best and you’ll notice something different. Their power comes from the ground up. As their club reaches the top of the backswing, their lower body is already shifting towards the target. The upper body and arms get left behind for a moment, then follow through in sequence. This is called the kinematic sequence: lower body, chest, arms, then club. It’s this chain of events that generates more energy, gets the low point after the ball, and creates that pure, powerful strike.

How to Train the Right Sequence

Start by taking some speed out of your swing. Slow things down deliberately to really feel the movement. Swing to the top, then focus on shifting your weight towards the target with your lower body before letting your arms and club follow. Don’t worry about distance at first—just groove the movement.

As you get comfortable, gradually add more speed. You’ll notice it starts to feel effortless, yet the ball goes further—sometimes much further—than when you were trying to muscle it. You’ll also find you gain better control of your club face, leading to straighter shots.

Practical Steps on the Range

Set up as normal with your iron.

Make a backswing and, before the club reaches the top, begin shifting your lower body towards the target.

Allow your arms and club to be left behind momentarily.

Turn your chest out the way and let the arms and club fire through last.

Start slow to get the movement, then gradually increase speed.

Even if you don’t strike it perfectly, you’ll see gains in distance and consistency. As you progress, repeat the same process with your driver. The feeling should be the same: shift, turn, and let the arms and club catch up.

The Payoff: Long and Straight Shots Without Swinging Harder

By focusing on sequence rather than effort, you’ll unlock a tempo that feels easy and looks effortless. You’ll hit it longer, strike it better, and find more fairways and greens.

Are You Making This Common Driver Mistake?

As a PGA professional, I see so many golfers falling out with their driver. One minute you love it, the next you’re watching your ball slice off into the rough, nowhere near as far as your swing deserves. It’s frustrating, but you’re far from alone. The good news is that adding 30, even 50 yards off the tee could be easier than you think – and you don’t need 101 swing thoughts to get there.

The Real Secret: A Simple Setup Change

Most golfers know they should play the ball forward in their stance with driver. But here’s where things often go wrong. You move the ball up, put the club behind it, and while your feet, knees and hips might be square, your shoulders and forearms are often set open – pointing left of your target. This open upper body encourages an out-to-in swing path, which means weak slices, loss of distance, and missed fairways.

The fix? Next time you set up, hover the clubhead directly behind the ball as normal, then move the clubhead back 6 or 7 inches so it rests on the ground. It will look like the ball is lined up with the toe. Suddenly, your shoulders and forearms will square up or even point a touch right of target. This tiny change does wonders for your swing path, setting you up to deliver the club more from the inside, helping you launch the ball higher and with less spin.

Why This Setup Delivers More Distance and Accuracy

When you adjust your setup like this, you’re not just changing how things look at address. You’re giving yourself a better chance to:

Strike the ball closer to the middle of the clubface

Catch the ball on the upswing, launching it higher with low spin

Square the clubface more easily, reducing those wild shots to the right

Most importantly, you’re making it easier to let the club travel up through impact with a more neutral (or slightly inside) path. This combination is the magic behind longer, straighter drives.

Get the Toe to Win the Race

If you’re someone who regularly leaves the clubface open and watches shots leak right, try this: as you make your swing, feel like the toe of the club is “winning the race” through impact. Imagine your hands and the toe working a bit faster, so the clubface is looking more down at the ball in the follow through, rather than being left open to the sky. This feeling will help you square the face and hit those lovely, powerful draws.

Don’t Overcomplicate It

We all want to hit it further, but too many swing thoughts will only make you tense and inconsistent. Use this straightforward routine:

Set up with the ball forward

Hover the club behind the ball

Move the clubhead back 6 or 7 inches, resting on the ground

Swing and focus on letting the toe win the race

You’ll soon see your club path improve, your strike get more consistent, and your drives fly further and straighter than ever. Even if you don’t swing it as fast as a tour pro, being more efficient with your delivery will unlock serious extra distance.

Make the Most of Your Game

Sometimes, the biggest changes come from the simplest tweaks. Give this setup a go and watch your confidence grow every time you pull the driver from the bag. If you want more personalised help with your swing, I offer online lessons through Skillest – it’s a great way to get tailored feedback, wherever you are in the world.

Every golfer knows the feeling: you make a brilliant practice swing, but as soon as you step up to the ball, something changes. The strike is poor, the ball goes offline, and you’re left frustrated, wondering why you can’t produce the same swing when it matters. The culprit? It’s almost always the golf ball itself, and the way our focus shifts the moment it appears.

The Five Big Mistakes Caused by Focusing on the Ball

Once the ball is in play, most golfers fall into one or more of these traps:

Trying to hit the ball

Trying to get the ball in the air

Trying to make the ball go straight

Trying to hit the ball further

Trying to strike the ball out the middle of the club face

Let’s break down each one, and more importantly, how to fix them.

Mistake 1: Just Trying to Hit the Ball

When you focus solely on hitting the ball, your swing often gets steep and choppy. The club comes down too sharply, digging into the ground and rarely producing a good shot. This is a classic mistake that creeps in when your attention is glued to the ball rather than your movement.

Mistake 2: Trying to Get the Ball in the Air

Many golfers instinctively try to lift the ball, hanging back on the trail foot in an attempt to get under it. This usually leads to fat or thin strikes and a loss of power. Remember, the club is designed with loft to help the ball up – you don’t need to force it.

Mistake 3: Forcing the Ball to Go Straight

Trying to guide the clubface into impact, in an effort to make the ball fly straight, often leaves the face wide open or closed. The result? Slices, hooks, and erratic contact. With longer clubs, this gets even more pronounced.

Mistake 4: Chasing Distance by Hitting Harder

There’s a difference between swinging faster and simply hitting harder. Trying to muscle the ball leads to poor strikes and inconsistent results, even if the club head speed looks good on the monitor.

Mistake 5: Obsessing Over Centre Strikes

Most golfers ignore strike location until things go wrong. When they do try to adjust, they have little idea how to influence strike point on the face. This creates a cycle of mis-hits and frustration.

The Simple Fix: Focus on Your Swing, Not the Ball

Here’s the solution: shift your focus away from the ball and onto your golf swing. Set up as normal, and think about the club head making half a circle on the backswing, then a full circle through impact. Your only aim is for the club to brush the ground at the bottom of the arc.

Golf is unique in that the ball is static. You don’t need to react to it. If you swing well and let the club move naturally, the ball simply gets in the way and is sent flying — with much better results.

Getting the Ball in the Air the Right Way

If you tend to hang back and try to lift the ball, focus on making your low point after the ball. Let the club travel down and through, striking ball then ground. Trust the loft and a little forward shaft lean to do the job for you.

Controlling Direction

Direction is all about clubface control at impact. If the face points right, you’ll see a fade or slice; left, and you’ll draw or hook it. Practise deliberately curving shots — try to hit intentional fades and draws. This builds awareness of face control and helps you find your neutral.

Swing Faster, Not Harder, for More Distance

To gain distance, simply focus on swinging the club faster, not on hitting the ball harder. Change your intent: let speed come from a free-flowing swing, and you’ll see extra yards without sacrificing strike quality.

Mastering Strike Location

Use face spray or impact tape to see where you’re striking the ball. Then, purposely try to hit shots out of the toe and heel. This experimentation helps you learn how to adjust. Don’t stress about the odd mis-hit — building this skill will pay off in consistency.

Make the Practice Swing Your Real Swing

The big lesson is that all these mistakes are rooted in focusing on the golf ball instead of your swing. Next time you play, let the ball get in the way of your motion. Trust your movement and let the club do the work. You’ll hit better shots, more consistently, and enjoy your golf far more.
